Mac heard a gunshot. It wasn’t from town this time; it sounded like it had come from the bay. Just as he realized it, he saw a fireball rise above the bent-over Australian pines. A second later, a loud explosion rocked the bay. Fearing for Ghost Runner and Pamela, he took off at an ungainly run, doing his best to avoid the obstacles in the road and moving as fast as his flip-flops would take him.
In order to avoid the massive puddles, Mac zigzagged along the road, trying to keep to dry land. Frustration overcame him and he abandoned the serpentine path that was more than doubling the distance, and started to move in a straight line. As soon as he hit the first puddle, mud grabbed at the flimsy sandals, trying to suck them into its slimy embrace. Mac had to fight to free his feet, finally giving up, and moving back to his previous course.
Finally, he reached the beach, relieved to see Ghost Runner where he’d left her. The feeling didn’t last long when he saw the fiery fragments from the propane tank in the water around the boat, and a flurry of activity in the cockpit. With his sunglasses aboard the boat, Mac was forced to squint into the sun, raising a hand to his brow in order to fight the glare off the water. Squinting harder to clarify his sight, he saw figures on the deck. Mac thought he saw someone climb onto the dive platform. When the figure unraveled itself before ducking behind the transom, he recognized his long-limbed deckhand.
He’d left Pamela alone with the woman; both were unique and easily identifiable. It appeared there were two men on deck, but at least they were putting out the small fires. He knew it was a bad idea when he saw Trufante hop the transom. Seconds later, his feeling was confirmed when the deckhand was enveloped in the spray from a fire extinguisher.
Mac had to do something. He kicked the flip-flops off his feet and was wading into the murky water when he heard his name called.
“Travis. Dude, over here.”
Mac turned his head toward a clump of palm trees, where he saw the slim figure of Commander lurking behind them. He couldn’t imagine what Commander had to offer, and turned back to the water.
“Shit, man. At least take this.”
Dangling from one of his skinny, tattooed fingers was a pistol. Mac shot a quick glance over at the boat. Trufante was nowhere to be seen. At this point, whatever help he could get he would need. Stepping over a pile of debris, he moved toward the palms.
Commander handed him the Glock. “Whatever shit we got between us, we’re even now.”
Mac couldn’t argue with that. He took the weapon, ejected the magazine, cocked the slide back slightly, and checked the chamber. Finding a shell, he examined the back of the magazine. “Down a round. Was that your work?” He nodded to the remnants of the tank still burning on the surface.
